Gastric Bypass

Gastic Bypass at Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery

The Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure reduces the size of the stomach by creating a small pouch and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. Patients will feel full more quickly than when the stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food eaten. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed, leading to further weight loss. Due to the malabsorptive nature of this procedure, it will be necessary to adhere to a life-long regimen of vitamin and mineral replacements for optimum nutritional health.
