  • Bariatric surgery has been shown to successfully reduce many weight-related health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux, high cholesterol, stress incontinence and degenerative arthritis pain. Obesity has also been linked to an increased incidence of cancer. The Bariatric Surgery Program at Surgical Associates of Atlanta offers a comprehensive approach, ensuring the patient is well-prepared prior to surgery and providing extensive support during the post-operative period. University Hospital Midtown is a level one Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, fully accredited by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) of the American College of Surgeons. Many insurers require this designation for reimbursement. Dr. Finley has performed bariatric procedures for adolescents and adults from the age of 15 years old and up at Emory University Hospital Midtown. We have the utmost confidence in the facility and the staff to provide outstanding care to our patients.

Patients who are considering bariatric surgery undergo an extensive preoperative evaluation. This includes:

    • Consultation with a Dietician with vast experience in dealing with patients both before and after bariatric surgery.
    • Psychological evaluation.
    • Other evaluations such as cardiac and pulmonary clearance, sleep studies, internal medicine or gastroenterology evaluations may be indicated.
    • Participation in one of our Weight Loss Surgery support groups both before and after the surgery is a necessary component of our Bariatric Surgery Program. Documented attendance at a minimum of 2 pre-op sessions and 3 post-op sessions will greatly influence your ability to effectively utilize the tool of WLS to achieve your goal of healthy living. Groups meet once a month in both Atlanta and Greensboro. The meetings are facilitated by a healthcare professional with extensive experience in bariatric surgery. We welcome any person and family members with interest in the bariatric surgery process--just considering it or at any point prior to or after a weight loss surgery procedure. Our purpose is to provide education, support and encouragement on the journey to better health with the aid of WLS. Sessions will include reinforcement for nutrition, exercise and behavior modification skills, speakers and workshops, a Q&A component and social interaction time.
